Second case of “device” found at the Chess Olympiad 2024 https://www.chessdom.com/second-case-of-device-found-at-the-chess-olympiad-2024/ Sat, 14 Sep 2024 22:59:35 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=93666 Round 3 game from the Chess Olympiad 2024 match Lebanon – Egypt had a score reversed due to “presence of electronic device”. Today, in round 4, another “device” reversed the score in the match Bosnia & Herzegovina – Thailand. (see updated score)

IM Dejan Marjanovic initially lost his game against FM Tinnakrit Arunnuntapanich. After anti-cheating control the game score was reversed. The official reason is “device” found.

Result reversed after anti-cheating control at the Chess Olympiad https://www.chessdom.com/result-reversed-after-anti-cheating-control-at-the-chess-olympiad/ Sat, 14 Sep 2024 11:20:04 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=93650 A fair play check after the match Lebanon – Egypt at the Chess Olympiad 2024 found “presence of electronic device”. The “device” mentioned results to be a simple SIM card, but that is not allowed by the anti-cheating measures at the Chess Olympiad 2024. After careful consideration, the decision by the Olympiad members is to reverse the score of the game. The player will be allowed to continue and there will be no more consequences for the team.

Update: Second “device” found case in Chess Olympiad 2024

One of Chessdom’s reporters in Budapest informs from the playing hall, “Result reversed on board 4 of Lebanon-Egypt due to the presence of an electronic device, found at the anti-cheating control after the game. Specifically, a SIM card. The punishment is a single game loss, player is allowed to continue in the tournament. A careless mistake, but serious Fair-Play checks are a must in order to safeguard the integrity of chess.”

Magnus Carlsen, chess.com, and Daniel Rensch filed a motion to dismiss Niemann’s complaints https://www.chessdom.com/magnus-carlsen-chess-com-and-daniel-rensch-filed-a-motion-to-dismiss-niemanns-complaints/ Sat, 03 Dec 2022 23:22:43 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=85485 Hans Niemann filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court (Eastern District of Missouri, Eastern Division). Plaintiff Hans Moke Niemann, represented by his attorneys Oved & Oved LLP and local Missouri counsel The Gartner Law Firm, is seeking a total of 400 million USD in damages from “Sven Magnus Øen Carlsen aka Magnus Carlsen, Play Magnus as Play Magnus Group, Chess.com LLC, Daniel Rensch aka Danny Rensch, and Hikaru Nakamura”.

Initially assigned judge Ronnie Lee White described Niemann’s Complaint as procedurally defective, later recusing himself from the case with the explanation that there are circumstances present in this case that could require recusal under 28 U.S.C. § 455. The case was reassigned to Judge Audrey Fleissig.

Magnus Carlsen, chess.com, and Daniel Rensch yesterday filed a motion to dismiss Niemann’s complaints. Carlsen’s filing says that Niemann is an admitted cheater who “wants to cash in by blaming others for the fallout from his own admitted misconduct”, while Rensch says in his filing that “the Court lacks personal jurisdiction over him”.

“After years of trying to curate a reputation as the bad boy of chess, Plaintiff Hans Niemann wants to cash in by blaming others for the fallout from his own admitted misconduct. Niemann’s Amended Complaint concedes that he has a well-known history of cheating. But rather than dealing with the unsurprising consequences of his own actions, Niemann now seeks to shift blame to reigning World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen and others, claiming a wholly implausible conspiracy to defame and boycott Niemann that somehow damaged his already dubious reputation to the tune of $100 million, reads Carlsen’s filing.

Ronnie Lee White, a judge assigned for the “Niemann v. Carlsen” case described Niemann’s Complaint as procedurally defective and asked for the Complaint to be amended: “Niemann’s Complaint is procedurally defective because it does not contain sufficient allegations of jurisdictional facts to establish the existence of diversity jurisdiction. (…) Neimann shall file an amended Complaint that alleges facts establishing the citizenship of all relevant parties to this action“. Hans Niemann must file an amended complaint by the 23rd of November 2022.

His chess speaks for itself https://www.chessdom.com/hans-niemanns-father-for-daily-mail-hans-is-a-good-kid-his-chess-speaks-for-itself/ Fri, 14 Oct 2022 20:54:34 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=83945 After Hans Niemann defeated the World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen in the third round of the Sinquefield Cup 2022, Carlsen decided to withdraw from the tournament without detailed explanations. Two weeks after, Magnus Carlsen refused to play against Niemann in the Julius Baer Generation Cup and resigned his game after two moves of play. By the end of the tournament, Magnus published the official statement on the case publicly accusing Hans Niemann of cheating. Hans Niemann confessed cheating online in random games on chess.com, but he claimed that he never cheated over-the-board. Chess.com removed Niemann from the platform, explaining their decision with the official statement, and announced to publish their findings on the Carlsen – Niemann case. Within the 72-page report on the case, chess.com claims that Niemann likely cheated in more than 100 online games.

Hans’s father David Niemann shortly commented on the case for Daily Mail: “Hans is a good kid. We love him and pray for him every day. He’s given his account. He’s said his game speaks for itself and it does“. David Niemann didn’t want to comment on the cheating and explained it is Hans’s story to tell.

Hans Niemann currently competes in the 2022 US Chess Championship. After his victory in the first round, Niemann joined the US Championship live studio to send the message “Chess speaks for itself. A few days later, Niemann told about the interesting situation he had at the place he visits during the tournament: “I was making an order and they knew my order and the guy said to me, this order speaks for itself!”.

GM Johan-Sebastian Christiansen discloses for VG that he witnessed match-fixing https://www.chessdom.com/gm-johan-sebastian-christiansen-discloses-for-vg-that-he-witnessed-match-fixing/ Fri, 14 Oct 2022 16:03:33 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=83931 Ever since the 19-year-old American grandmaster Hans Niemann defeated Magnus Carlsen, who consequently withdrew from the Sinquefield Cup 2022 (see the timetable of events related to the Carlsen – Niemann case below), the topic of cheating in chess is the top news in mass medias. Norwegian VG earlier reported on different cases of cheating in online chess (Read more: Former president of Swedish Chess Federation admits to losing 43 games on purpose), publishing today a controversial case from the major OTB tournament – Croatian National Team Chess Championship 2022.

As VG reports, the Norwegian grandmaster and a member of the Norwegian National Chess Team, Johan-Sebastian Christiansen, witnessed the match-fixing situation at the Croatian Team Chess Championship (League 1A). Christiansen was playing the third board for GSK SOLIN-CEMEX Solin and his team needed a draw in the last round to secure the title of the National Champion. Christiansen told for VG that the last round match was fixed the night before the start of the final round, as the teams’ captains agreed to a draw: “At the team meeting we sat there, we had to wait for the negotiations with the other team to be finished. They came in and said yes, it will be 3-3“. Christiansen says he refused to finish his game with a quick draw, thus he wasn’t in the team composition for the last-round match. The match between GSK SOLIN-CEMEX and SK STRIDON Strigova finished after only 10 minutes of play, as all the six boards signed a draw after playing 10 (or fewer) moves.

As expected, GSK Solin-Cemex Solin won the event with 15 match points with GM Alexander Donchenko (Board 1), IM Leon Livaic (Board 2), GM Johan-Sebastian Christiansen (Board 3), GM Sasa Martinovic (Board 4), GM Davor Rogic (Board 5), GM Bojan Kurajica (Board 6), GM Ognjen Cvitan (reserve player) and IM Ivica Armanda (reserve player) in the roaster. Liburnija Rijeka and Zagreb tied for second place with 13 match points (each). Scroll down for final rankings of the event

It is interesting that three (out of five) last-round matches finished in the same fashion. SK Petar Sedlar Pepe drew to SK Pula and SK Sesvete Agroproteinka drew to SK Ferit-Osijek as the players agreed for draws on all boards after playing a few moves. Replay the games below
