anti-cheating – Chessdom https://www.chessdom.com Chess, chess news, live chess games Sat, 14 Sep 2024 23:00:42 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.6.2 Result reversed after anti-cheating control at the Chess Olympiad https://www.chessdom.com/result-reversed-after-anti-cheating-control-at-the-chess-olympiad/ Sat, 14 Sep 2024 11:20:04 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=93650 A fair play check after the match Lebanon – Egypt at the Chess Olympiad 2024 found “presence of electronic device”. The “device” mentioned results to be a simple SIM card, but that is not allowed by the anti-cheating measures at the Chess Olympiad 2024. After careful consideration, the decision by the Olympiad members is to reverse the score of the game. The player will be allowed to continue and there will be no more consequences for the team.

Update: Second “device” found case in Chess Olympiad 2024

One of Chessdom’s reporters in Budapest informs from the playing hall, “Result reversed on board 4 of Lebanon-Egypt due to the presence of an electronic device, found at the anti-cheating control after the game. Specifically, a SIM card. The punishment is a single game loss, player is allowed to continue in the tournament. A careless mistake, but serious Fair-Play checks are a must in order to safeguard the integrity of chess.”

Ivan Sokolov: cheating in chess online is as bad as cheating OTB https://www.chessdom.com/ivan-sokolov-cheating-in-chess-online-is-as-bad-as-cheating-otb/ Thu, 06 Oct 2022 22:43:46 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=83564 Ivan Sokolov, the coach of the Olympiad gold medalists and author of Winning chess middlegames, shares his opinion on cheating in chess in view of the ongoing Hans Niemann – Magnus Carlsen case (scroll down for full timeline of events)

Ivan Sokolov comments, “Cheating in chess discussions… Many claim cheating online is not as bad as OTB. Sorry! It is exactly the same! The ONLY reason online cheaters do not do OTB is they did not (yet) figure out how to do it but – would LOVE to!”

Sokolov calls for a lifetime ban for cheaters, no matter online or OTB and says, “Cheating – life time ban! Game has to be clean!”

Anti-cheating measures implemented at the European Chess Club Cup https://www.chessdom.com/anti-cheating-measures-implemented-at-the-european-chess-club-cup/ Mon, 03 Oct 2022 13:18:08 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=83395 In view of the ongoing Carlsen – Niemann story and the general tension created around the problem of cheating, the organizers of the European Chess Club Cup have implemented anti-cheating measures. There will be a 15 min delay on games transmission and cameras broadcast on all boards in the venue.

The 15 minutes anti-cheating delay may come handy in view of a possible explosive match-up in the next rounds – Magnus Carlsen vs Sebastien Feller. To this day, Sebastien Feller is the highest rated chess player to be caught cheating. He is now playing on board 1 for his team CE Le Cavalier Differdange and may be paired against Offerspill’s Chess Club top board Magnus Carlsen is later rounds.

Over the course of 13 rounds, these competitors will battle for $250,500 in prize money and the coveted title of 2022 U.S. Champion.

In view of the ongoing scandal between Carlsen and Niemann and the events during the Sinquefield Cup, the organizers from the Saint Louis Chess Club have clarified their position on cheating. They will also implement strict anti-cheating measures during the US Chess Championship. Here is the full statement:

Over more than a decade, we have worked tirelessly to fuel a resurgence of chess in America, to create a place for elite chess players to play at the highest levels for the greatest purses, and to democratize access to chess to all players, no matter age, race or skill set.

It’s been remarkable to see the widespread discussion around chess over the past several weeks, but it’s important that we are clear on our position as it relates to cheating. We take great pride in being able to host the top chess players from across the world at the Saint Louis Chess Club. As with all events, it’s imperative that we maintain high standards for fair tournament play. We always have – and will continue – to implement extensive anti-cheating measures. As we prepare for the upcoming U.S. Chess and U.S. Women’s Chess Championships, we anticipate hosting another successful event, complete with rigorous protocols to ensure the best chess players in the country can continue to compete on an even playing field.

Ramesh RB: FIDE should have devised a good practical solution to the cheating problem years ago https://www.chessdom.com/ramesh-rb-fide-should-have-devised-a-good-practical-solution-to-the-cheating-problem-years-ago/ Tue, 27 Sep 2022 07:42:03 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=83130 World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen today published the official statement on the recent “Carlsen – Niemann” controversy and accused Hans Niemann of cheating more than the 19-year-old American admitted publicly. Hikaru Nakamura commented on Carlsen’s statement during his live stream saying that he believes Carlsen thinks that Hans Niemann cheated in the game they played at the Sinquefield Cup 2022. Hans Niemann defeated Magnus Carlsen in the third round of the Sinquefield Cup, and Carlsen decided to withdraw from the event day after. Two weeks later, Magnus refused to play against Hans Niemann at the Julius Baer Generation Cup and resigned his game after only two played moves.

The chess coach bronze medalist for India at Chess Olympiads 2014 & 2022 Ramesh RB commented, “Immense respect for the world champion for taking a principled stand on an important issue, forcing the world to pay attention to it at a huge personal cost. Ideally, the chess world and FIDE should have devised a good practical solution to the cheating problem years ago.” FIDE have published an official position, which criticizes Carlsen to certain extent, but more is expected from the World chess governing organization.

Ramesh RB continued “Hopefully, a full enquiry will be conducted by FIDE & steps taken to avoid a similar scenario in future. A reasonably strong player does not need external help throughout the game, indication at a few (even 1) critical moment(s) is sufficient to tilt the game in his favour. I don’t believe that % of moves matching with an engine is the only way to prove a player has taken external help. By default, all major chess events should have basic protocols in place: a) physically PREVENT gadgets (plastics/electrical/…)from entering the venue. b) jamming signals into the playing hall. c) delay live relay d) spectators should not carry gadgets into the venue etc. In India, there was a similar instance more than 10-15 years ago. Punitive action was taken much delayed despite players raising concerns. Of course, it is very easy to cast apprehensions on a player’s integrity by throwing unsubstantiated allegations. It has happened in the past. Innocent players were accused unfairly. So the accuser should be very responsible before making the accusation. The best solution is PREVENTION, as obtaining proof is almost next to impossible if the help was taken only once or twice in a game. A strong player can judge opponents’ analytical capabilities. At the lower level, it is most difficult.”

Ramesh RB concluded, “I trust the World Champions’ instinct in this instance. Even if the cheating has happened in the past, that is sufficient ground to avoid playing against that particular player. The best proof will be the players’ results in the next year, under public scrutiny.”

10 questions to Magnus Carlsen regarding the Carlsen – Niemann case https://www.chessdom.com/10-questions-to-magnus-carlsen-regarding-the-carlsen-niemann-case/ Thu, 22 Sep 2022 10:16:30 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=82790 The Carlsen – Niemann case that started with Magnus Carlsen’s withdraw from the Sinquefield Cup 2022 is generating huge attention worldwide. On Chessdom.com more than 2 million page views on the case related articles so far, but 56 articles later (scroll down for a chronological list) there are more questions than answers as to why Carlsen and Niemann have this conflict. Even last night’s interview with Carlsen created more mystery and postponed the detailed explanation for next week.

Here are 10 questions to Magnus Carlsen regarding the Carlsen – Niemann case. Similarly, you can find the 10 questions to Hans Niemann here.

1. As Anish Giri points, on August 12 you were having two friendly games with Hans Niemann on the beach in Miami. The keyword here is friendly. What happened between August 12 and September to provoke your reaction during the Sinquefield Cup?

2. Do you have concrete proof Hans Niemann cheated OTB?

3. Do you have a personal issue with Hans Niemann or is it only related to cheating online and OTB?

4. FIDE has been silent on the case. Do you think the central governing body of chess should intervene in some way?

5. Garry Kasparov says: Unless the chess world is to be dragged down into endless pathetic rumors, clear statements must be made. Do you agree with Kasparov?

6. Hans Niemann continued to play the Julius Baer Generations Cup despite the tremendous pressure and even managed to qualify for the knockout phase. What would you say about his games in this tournament?

7. Anish Giri says, we know about online cheating by multiple other chess players. Do you know about more cases? Will you shed light on them?

8. In your interview you mention that cheaters should not be taken lightly either online or OTB. Is the current case with Hans Niemann your way to persuade as many players as possible to never cheat in a chess game?

9. Martin B. Justesen believes Carlsen is handling the Chess.com merger like Elon Musk did with the purchase of Twitter. Do you agree?

10. What is your endgame in this Carlsen – Niemann case?

There are certainly more questions that arise from the current case. If you would like to add a question to this list or join the discussion, head to the Chessdom Facebook page here

Anish Giri: we know about online cheating by multiple other chess players https://www.chessdom.com/anish-giri-we-know-about-online-cheating-by-multiple-other-chess-players/ Tue, 20 Sep 2022 04:41:22 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=82586 19-year-old Hans Niemann today AGAIN defeated the World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen, in the 6th round of the Julius Baer Generation Cup, as Magnus Carlsen resigned his game in the second move. Carlsen went offline as soon as he resigned, but he has not withdrawn from the tournament. Replay the game Hans Niemann – Magnus Carlsen here

Susan Polgar commented on Carlsen’s resignation saying it’s: “Definitely a protest move!“, while GM Jon Ludvig Hammer said Carlsen should be sanctioned during the live Norwegian TV program. Fair-Play specialist Kenneth Regan joined the live studio of the Julius Baer Generation Cup and spoke about Carlsen – Niemann’s game at the Sinquefield Cup 2022: Niemann played well, but not too well.

Anish Giri also shared his thoughts on the case. “Show must go on. It reminds me of when you play pokr and you bluff on the first car, then comes another card and you keep bluffing. But it looks like [Magnus] is really insinuating something, but until you catch someone, you cannot do anything,” said Giri. “It just looks very odd now. It makes sense if supposedly Hans is cheating, but if he doesn’t it is really very wrong.” Giri explained, “It is a big problem to play people who have been banned, especially those who have admitted to have cheated online before, because you lose trust in these people. My advice to young players is to never cheat in small events because these things stick and it is not easy to get rid of this.”

Anish Giri admitted, “Let me be very frank, we knew about all this stuff and the online cheating [of Hans Niemann] and we know about online cheating by multiple other players as well. […] But I have a feeling Hans never cheated against me because looking at my own games he usually plays very badly.” See the full interview of Anish Giri in the video and More reactions to Magnus Carlsen’s resignation against Hans Niemann

Nigel Davies, “If Carlsen does not speak soon, the FIDE Ethics Commission should act” https://www.chessdom.com/nigel-davies-if-carlsen-does-not-speak-soon-the-fide-ethics-commission-should-act/ Sun, 11 Sep 2022 11:15:37 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=81967 After Hans Niemann defeated the World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen in the third round of the Sinquefield Cup 2022, Carlsen decided to withdraw from the tournament without detailed explanations. Rumors that Magnus Carlsen suspected Niemann was cheating started spreading over social medias, and each day brings new theories on the case. Just today New allegations on Niemann – Carlsen case that Hans Niemann performs much better with live DGT boards emerged. But GM Nigel Davies has another take on the story, asking for direct and quick action to minimize damage in chess. And if needed, GM Davies asks the FIDE Ethics Commission to act. Here is his interview for Chessdom.com

You are well know for having strong positions always backed by serious facts and proof. What is your take on the ongoing Magnus Carlsen – Hans Niemann cheating allegations scandal? You posted a suggestion how to deal with it on Twitter. Can you explain the process for the audience? Are there alternative approaches?

It’s very damaging to the game and needs to be resolved.

Above all there needs to be a process which is clear and consistent. Although initially there were just hints that cheating might have taken place, allowing damaging rumours to continue should be interpreted as a clear indication of what was meant. In the absence of hard evidence that cheating took place it should be counted as a ‘false accusation’, as was the Solozhenkin case some years back. At the same time there should also be a final opportunity for clarification.

11-SepNew allegations within Niemann – Carlsen case: Hans Niemann performs much better with live DGT boards

This is not the only cheating allegations scandal in chess, rather a repeating story. Some allegations without proof were punished, like the Solozhenkin case you mention, others like Topalov’s allegations against Kramnik were not. We have precedents in both directions.

In every case there should be a clear and consistent process to follow.

Do you believe Carlsen will make a statement by the end of the tournament?

I don’t know, but if he doesn’t make one soon the issue should be taken up by the Ethics Commission.

You have strong and clear opinions on topics, but you are also a fantastic author. Recently we had a look at 10 ways to get better in chess  What next can we expect next from you?

I don’t currently have any books planned, though I continue to work on improving my tigerchess.com site.
