Komodo Dragon – Chessdom https://www.chessdom.com Chess, chess news, live chess games Wed, 30 Nov 2022 16:05:37 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.6.2 Lc0 wins TCEC Season 23 Subfinal https://www.chessdom.com/lc0-wins-tcec-season-23-subfinal/ Wed, 30 Nov 2022 14:21:09 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=85290 The TCEC Season 23 Subfinal is a bonus 3rd-place match between the loser of the Superfinal (Lc0) and the winner of the Infrafinal (Komodo Dragon), played with the same opening book as the Superfinal. It ended with a decisive victory for Lc0, +24 -13 =63. Most viewers predicted a Lc0 win by +1 to +5, so this +11 margin of victory is a surprise. Still, few could have predicted how the Subfinal would turn out based on the start of the match.

Komodo won the very first opening, but Leela struck back by winning the second opening. A few tense draws later, Komodo won the fifth opening, but Leela again struck back immediately by winning the sixth opening. Komodo broke the streak by winning the tenth opening, then won the 13th opening as well with a pretty combination (diagram). When it further won the 15th opening, it looked like the Subfinal might turn into a rout. Even Stockfish was ahead by only +4 at this stage of the Superfinal.

TCEC Season 23 so far: Stockfish wins TCEC S23 / It’s Stockfish vs Leela for the TCEC Superfinal / Full standings Premier Division / Ethereal trailblazes TCEC League 1 / Minic convincingly wins TCEC League 2

White to play and win. 31. Qe3! is a pretty queen sacrifice, deflecting the Black queen from the f7-pawn. 31…Qxe3 32. Nxf7+ Kg7 33. Nf5+ Kf8 34. Rxg8+ Kxg8 and 35. Nxe3 leaves White a pawn up with a winning endgame. Note 33…Kxf7 does not help since 34. Rxd7+ Ke8 drops the g8-rook with check. 35. Rxg8+ Kxd7 36. Rg7+ followed by 37. Nxe3 is also winning for White.

But just as Leela seemed down, she turned on god mode. Leela won 10 of the next 22 openings before Komodo finally won the 35th opening. One “busted” opening and a traded win later, Leela won another five openings to round out the superfinal. The subfinal did turn into a rout, but in Leela’s favor. The dramatic comeback from -3 to +11 speaks to the dangers of small sample size as well. Even the full 100 games is not many compared to the tens of thousands of games that engine developers regularly play when testing their patches!

There was still the “bookmaker’s subfinal”, between GM Matthew Sadler and Jeroen Noomen. The two authored the superfinal book, with Jeroen running out the victor in that match by one decisive opening. This bookmaker’s subfinal also turned out very close, and in fact uncannily resembled the superfinal: the two bookmakers remained neck and neck through most of the subfinal, involved a dramatic game 100 (Leela failed to convert a position that Komodo evaluated at +4), and ended with the same score – Jeroen wins by one opening. This time though, GM Sadler has the consolation prize of getting more wins for one engine. Jeroen only scored two Komodo wins, but GM Sadler got five. Of course, this also means that Jeroen got 11 Lc0 wins, while GM Sadler only got seven.

Next up are several more bonus matches: there are some very long time control games (6+ hours per side per game), some DFRC games (Double Fischer Random Chess, where both sides start with a different-but-valid FRC position), and exhibition games by the top engines against the best of the chasing pack. The pause gives all competitors a time to catch their breath before Season 24. Find all bonus games at https://tcec-chess.com/

It’s Stockfish vs Leela for the TCEC Superfinal https://www.chessdom.com/its-stockfish-vs-leela-for-the-tcec-superfinal/ Thu, 20 Oct 2022 09:31:30 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=84182 The Premier Division of TCEC Season 23 is over, and we will see Stockfish take on Leela in the superfinal while Komodo Dragon takes on Ethereal in the infrafinal. Although this was the foreshadowed result at the halfway mark, the second half of the division brought up plenty of drama. I had written then that it would take a major shock for Stockfish to miss the superfinal, which did not materialize, and Stockfish cruised through. On the other hand, Leela had a 1.5-point lead over Komodo Dragon, a lead that meant Komodo Dragon realistically needed to win an opening against Leela to stand a chance. And it happened! Komodo scored a crucial 1.5-0.5 win over Leela in the third round and, coupled with wins over the entire chasing pack, Komodo would have caught Leela there and then had Stockfish not won a third opening Komodo. With only a half-point gap now, a tense fourth round saw Leela draw Komodo in the head-to-head while dropping points against Ethereal. Meanwhile, Komodo kept winning, once again recording wins against the entire chasing pack to set up a nervy finale. With two rounds left, Leela needed to either beat Stockfish with White, or hope for Stockfish to notch yet another win against Komodo, in which case Leela would make the superfinal on the second tiebreak (Sonneborn–Berger score). Leela failed to shake the unshakeable Stockfish, and so had to pray for a fourth Stockfish victory. The opening was a difficult one for Black, but Stockfish had managed to defend it, so it was possible Komodo might manage the same. For a while it looked like Komodo might hold, but eventually Black’s bad light-square bishop proved a decisive liability. Stockfish broke through to send Leela to the superfinal. It was the first time since Season 14 when the superfinalists had been decided by tiebreak.

TCEC Season 23 so far: Full standings Premier Division / Ethereal trailblazes TCEC League 1 / Minic convincingly wins TCEC League 2

A critical moment in the game that decided the second superfinalist. After having played 13…b5?! earlier and allowing Stockfish to clamp down the bishop with 14. c5, Komodo accepts doubled e-pawns that all but wreck the b7-bishop’s future. With an eventual Na5, Stockfish forced …Ba8 and kept Komodo’s bishop inactive for the rest of the game.

The fight for fourth place was less dramatic. Ethereal continued to play well, losing no openings to lower-ranked engines. It finished with 28/56, four points ahead of Stoofvlees. Stoofvlees went through a harrowing moment where it looked like SlowChess might catch it in fifth – SlowChess scored a head-to-head win in the third round while also drawing against Stockfish. Nonetheless, the 2.5-point lead at the halfway mark proved a bridge too far. SlowChess’s final score of 23/56 left it a point behind Stoofvlees, but three points ahead of rofChade in seventh. rofChade was the only engine to not win an opening in the division, but it did manage to score more draws than Berserk to finish half a point ahead.

The infrafinal is next, with Ethereal taking on Komodo Dragon in a 100-game match. Komodo Dragon is the heavy favorite, and the main question is whether Ethereal will win any openings. It is rare for the Big Three to lose to other engines, and losing an opening is even rarer. Still, with Ethereal having shown great progress in the Premier Division & 50 openings to play, it might well manage a couple. Testing is currently in progress and the infrafinal is slated to start in a day’s time. All games will be played live at the official website: https://tcec-chess.com/ and TCEC Twitch TV

Stockfish wins the jubilee edition of the TCEC Cup https://www.chessdom.com/stockfish-wins-the-jubilee-edition-of-the-tcec-cup/ Fri, 27 May 2022 11:42:29 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=76883 Indomitable engine Stockfish, having already won the TCEC Season 22, won the TCEC Cup 10 by defeating Komodo Dragon in the finals. After Stockfish’s dominant performance in Premier Division and record-setting victory against Komodo Dragon in the Superfinal, few people would bet against Stockfish winning the Cup. The short matches of the Cup meant that small sample size effects are magnified, and it is possible another engine will score an upset. Still, Stockfish lived up to its billing. It was in arguably the toughest part of the bracket, having to first beat Koivisto, then Stoofvlees, and finally Leela to reach the finals, but it navigated all these matches smoothly. In the match against subfinal winner Leela, it won the first two opening pairs to storm to a dominating lead, and although Leela won two games later, Stockfish won the reverse both times to record a 6-4 victory. In the finals, Komodo Dragon surprised many observers by winning the first game, but it too was unable to hold the reverse. When Stockfish won the third opening, the writing was on the wall. Stockfish drew the remaining openings to emerge the winner, having beaten all its closest rivals without losing any openings.

Away from Stockfish’s rampage, the spotlight was on several fast-improving engines, especially Koivisto and Berserk (who had just missed out on promotion to Premier Division and League 2 respectively). Unfortunately for both engines, neither made it past the first two rounds. Koivisto had the misfortune of running into Stockfish in the second round, while 5th seed Stoofvlees in the first round proved a mountain too high for Berserk. Koivisto lost the first two openings against Stockfish and was promptly eliminated, but Berserk can at least point to the competitiveness of its match against Stoofvlees: although much of the first round saw the higher-ranked engines slaughtering their lower-division opponents, Stoofvlees needed tiebreaks to overcome Berserk.

Elsewhere, the big surprise package was Revenge. Seeded 12th, it served up the only “cupset” in the second round by defeating 4th seed rofChade, and then followed up with another cupset against 8th seed Igel. Revenge’s run was finally ended in the semifinals by Komodo Dragon, but it produced yet another surprise in the 3rd-place playoff by defeating Leela in game 3. Although Leela won the reverse to draw the opening, it is rare for one of the top engines to lose to lower-division opposition. If, as many predict, Berserk makes it to League 1 next season, the battle for the two Premier Division promotion spots promises to be very closely contested.

The TCEC Swiss is next. Stockfish will again be the favorite, but the nature of the Swiss format means that one of its rivals could pip Stockfish to the title if they can score well against the lower half of the field. Komodo Dragon is the defending champion, having won the previous edition of the Swiss by one point. All matches will be played live on https://tcec-chess.com

Leela Chess Zero wins the TCEC Subfinal https://www.chessdom.com/leela-chess-zero-wins-the-tcec-subfinal/ Mon, 16 May 2022 21:03:51 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=76468 True to her Petrosian-esque reputation of a strong match player who does not often win tournaments, Leela Chess Zero defeated Komodo Dragon 54.5-45.5 (+24 -15 =61) to win the TCEC Subfinal. The match started out closely contested, with Leela scoring wins in games 1 & 5 before Komodo Dragon evened the score with its own wins in games 7 & 13. Three draws later, Leela regained the lead with a win in game 17, followed by two more wins in games 21 and 23 before Komodo Dragon fought back to win game 25.There followed a bloody series of games where both engines took turns to win games – but not openings – before Komodo Dragon once again evened the score by winning games 34 and 38. This was as far as Komodo Dragon got however, as Leela won game 39 and never lost the lead again. Living up to bookmaker Jeroen Noomen’s observation that decisive games dry up as the match progresses, the second half of the Subfinal was less bloody, but there were more decisive openings. If engines really do get tired, Komodo Dragon actually played this match with a substantial handicap since it had just played a 100-game superfinal! Upcoming: TCEC Cup jubilee edition starts today!

Lc0’s victory reignited an old debate about whether the Premier Division was fair, as it had “failed” to select the two strongest engines for the Superfinal. Still, even Leela superfan mrbdzz agreed that the Komodo and Leela were quite close in strength, resulting in an exciting match. Furthermore, Stockfish was kibitzing the Subfinal and it pointed out several winning moves that both Leela and Komodo missed. Grandmaster Matthew Sadler agreed, pointing out that there was more of a difference between Komodo Dragon’s and Leela’s styles than Stockfish/Komodo. The Subfinal was also something of a success for GM Sadler, since he evened the “bookmaker’s score” with Jeroen – in this informal competition between the two bookmakers, Jeroen had “won” the Superfinal (there were more decisive openings selected by Jeroen in the Superfinal), but the reverse happened in the Subfinal. Read more: Matthew Sadler explains How to Maintain Your Chess Strength

With the conclusion of the Subfinal, next on the agenda is the 32-player TCEC Cup. In the last edition of the Cup, Stockfish had finished first, Leela second, and Komodo third. Although Stockfish is undoubtedly still the hot favorite to win the Cup, we’ll see several up-and-coming engines play against their higher-ranked peers. Koivisto and Berserk, who had just missed out on promotion from League 3 and League 1 respectively, will be especially keen to make an early statement on their Premier Division credentials next season. Stockfish wins TCEC Season 22, sets records https://www.chessdom.com/stockfish-wins-tcec-season-22-sets-records/ Thu, 21 Apr 2022 14:09:26 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=75375 Defending champion Stockfish is the winner of the Top Chess Engine Championship Season 22. It was up a near-decisive twelve points at the half-way mark, and although Komodo Dragon slowed the bleeding somewhat in the second half of the Superfinal, Stockfish’s lead has grown to +18 as of time of writing (game 88/100). Stockfish not only won in dominating fashion, but it set a record: Stockfish mathematically won the Superfinal in game 84, which is the earliest point at which a 100-game superfinal has ever been decided. Two more records remain at reach: Stockfish has twelve games left to break the record for the biggest margin of victory in a Superfinal (currently also held by Stockfish when it scored +20 vs. Komodo in Season 12) and, if it can avoid losing, it will also set a new record for a Superfinal with no lost openings. LiveTCEC official site / TCEC Twitch TV / Superfinal preview  Review: TCEC Premire division final standings / Report after DRR2 / Report after DRR3

For Stockfish fans, this dominating performance is just the beginning: Stockfish 15 has just been released, and immediately afterwards, a new NNUE gaining another 2-3 elo in self-play was trained. Runner-up Komodo Dragon can also look back on Season 22 as a successful campaign. Although it was soundly defeated in the Superfinal, it did reach the Superfinal for the first time since Season 13. MoreChess’s icons are now Carlsen and Stockfish

Next up is the subfinal, a 100-game match between Komodo Dragon and 3rd-place finisher Leela Chess Zero, where the latter will try to prove that it should have been the one to challenge Stockfish in the Superfinal. Although Leela did finish well behind Komodo Dragon in the Premier Division, it was also undefeated against both Komodo Dragon and Stockfish. Leela has historically been stronger in match play than in tournaments, so we will likely witness a tough battle. After the subfinal, the chess fans can expect the Cup, the Swiss, and Fischer Random Chess event. All games will be played live at https://tcec-chess.com/

Stockfish takes dominating lead at halfway in the TCEC Season 22 Superfinal https://www.chessdom.com/stockfish-takes-dominating-lead-at-halfway-in-the-tcec-season-22-superfinal/ Fri, 15 Apr 2022 14:27:06 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=75321 We have just reached the halfway mark of the TCEC Season 22 Superfinal. Defending champion Stockfish leads Komodo Dragon by 12 points (+17 -5 =28), a dominant performance that all but ensures that it will win the Superfinal. Stockfish signaled its intent straight from the get-go by winning the first opening with its signature move g4!, and reeled off two more opening wins before Komodo Dragon won its first game in game 9. However, Stockfish won the reverse game to draw the opening. Although not as dominant as Leela’s demolition of rofChade in the Infrafinal, Stockfish’s performance is such that Komodo Dragon has yet to win an opening. Komodo Dragon did score a few moral victories, such as in Game 13 when it successfully drew after finding a winning move that Stockfish failed to find, and in Game 40 when it did a better job defending the opening than Stockfish had, reaching an endgame with real drawing chances. Still, it conceded unnecessary losses with self-inflicted weakening moves in Game 6 and Game 46 to find itself on the brink. LiveTCEC official site / TCEC Twitch TV / Superfinal preview More: Chess’s icons are now Carlsen and Stockfish

Stockfish is on track to set two TCEC records: the most decisive Superfinal ever (the current record is +20 over 100 games, also set by Stockfish against Komodo in Season 12), and an “undefeated” Superfinal where the only games it loses are to “to the opening book”. Barring a miracle, the second half of the Superfinal will be one of damage control for Komodo Dragon, as it fights to avoid being on the wrong end of history. Afterwards, however, it will get the chance to redeem itself against Leela in the Subfinal.

Stockfish wins TCEC Season 22 Premier Division https://www.chessdom.com/stockfish-wins-tcec-season-22-premier-division/ Mon, 28 Mar 2022 13:56:59 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=75198 In a historic edition of the Premier division of TCEC, defending champion Stockfish qualified for the Superfinal half a point ahead of Komodo Dragon, who was in turn three points ahead of 3rd placed Leela Chess Zero.

TCEC Premire division final standings / Report after DRR2 / Report after DRR3

stockfish

Stockfish did not have it easy, and for much of the division it trailed Komodo Dragon after the latter benefited from a Scorpio blunder in the first double round robin (DRR) to record a 2-0 double kill. Still, Stockfish turned in a near-flawless performance – it won all but two white games it played against the bottom five engines while successfully drawing every game with black, and further scored a head-to-head win against Komodo Dragon. It finished the division as the only engine not to lose a game. Komodo Dragon was almost as dominant against the lower half of the field, but the loss to Stockfish, coupled with a difficult loss to Stoofvlees in the third DRR, left it half a point behind in second. Season 21 runner-up and fan favorite Leela Chess Zero finished third. It was the only engine not to lose to Stockfish, but it fell behind in the first DRR when it lost to rofChade in spite of winning the reverse, and its chances of reaching the Superfinal dimmed further when it failed to convert superior positions against Stoofvlees and Slowchess in the second DRR. It finally finished third, 3 points behind Komodo Dragon, but 8 points clear of rofChade in 4th place.
Speaking of rofChade, this engine returned with NNUE this season after playing without it in the previous two seasons. The effect was immediate, as after getting relegated to League 2 in Season 21, rofChade not only navigated its way to Premier Division but also pipped perennial dark horse Stoofvlees into fourth place. Stoofvlees had a bad start in the division, losing openings to Slowchess and Igel, before eventually clawing its way back to finish fifth. Playing in the Premier Division for the first time, newcomer Slowchess flirted with relegation, but capitalized on ScorpioNN’s misadventures to survive the drop. ScorpioNN had been involved in relegation battles for the past several seasons, and its streak finally ended this season when it lost twice with White – in addition to the blunder against Komodo, ScorpioNN crashed once against Igel. Igel, the only engine playing without an update, still managed to win an opening against Stoofvlees, but was unable to capitalize on the unexpected gift from ScorpioNN’s crash to finish last.
Next up is the infrafinal, between the 3rd and 4th place finishers – so Lc0 and rofChade. Leela is starting as the heavy favorite, with most viewers predicting a Leela victory by roughly 10 points – a very substantial margin of victory given the shorter length of the infrafinal.

After the infrafinal, Stockfish and Komodo Dragon will take the stage. It will be the first Superfinal since Season 13 in which no GPU-based neural-network engine has competed in, and the first Superfinal between two NNUE engines. It will also be the first time Komodo – still the second-most successful engine in TCEC – has reached the Superfinal since Season 13. Stockfish developer Michael Chaly has already predicted a crushing victory for Stockfish.

Special thanks to Cato the Younger
