Sergey Karjakin – Chessdom https://www.chessdom.com Chess, chess news, live chess games Thu, 05 Sep 2024 12:00:03 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.6.2 Karjakin under drone attack in Ukraine https://www.chessdom.com/karjakin-under-drone-attack-in-ukraine/ Thu, 05 Sep 2024 11:44:36 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=93316 The Russian propaganda channel Match.TV, cited by Ukrainian Tribuna.ua, breaks the news that Sergey Karjakin was under drone strike. Karjakin entered Ukrainian territory and while there fell under drone strike in the Khrakiv direction.

Karjakin was traveling by car with the Russian army. At the video the Russian grandmaster shared, there was a damaged vehicle, but no injuries were initially reported. But then Karjakin issued a statement.

Update: Sergey Karjakin commented for Russian media, “On the way to our destination we were attacked by drones. Thank to the skill of our driver, we managed to escape with only slight injuries and broken windows.

As it is usual in the past years, Karjakin enters the news without any specific chess merit and with absurd topics – from calling Magnus Carlsen a fascist, to suggesting parallel world chess federation, to falling under bans and sanctions.

Peter Heine Nielsen: Karjakin interview should lead to an immediate ban https://www.chessdom.com/peter-heine-nielsen-karjakin-interview-should-lead-to-an-immediate-ban/ Thu, 30 Mar 2023 04:57:00 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=87573 Last year the FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Commission (EDC) reached a verdict on the case 2/2022, relating to public statements by Grandmaster Sergey Karjakin (FIDE ID 14109603). It led to a 6 months ban, that prevented Karjakin from playing Candidates Chess 2022.

Peter Heine Nielsen points to a new Karjakin interview (read the most important parts of the interview here) and asks for an immediate ban. Just recently the Ukrainian Parliament sanctions 55 Russian athletes including Sergey Karjakin, Anatoly Karpov and Sergei Shipov

Karjakin gets pressed into saying that Carlsen is a “fascist” – new controversial interview https://www.chessdom.com/karjakin-gets-pressed-into-saying-that-carlsen-is-a-fascist-new-controversial-interview/ Wed, 29 Mar 2023 21:15:32 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=87580 This March 28th Sergey Karjakin gave a new controversial interview. For Russia-1 TV and the pro-Kremlin journalist Korchevnikov. Karjakin expressed his opinion, among other things, on the 6 months FIDE ban, his compatriot Ian Nepomniachtchi, and the current World Champion Magnus Carlsen.

Carlsen’s coach Peter Heine Nielsen followed-up the interview with a swift reaction and called for a new ban on Karjakin

Here are some bits of the long Karjakin interview for Russia-1.

Korchevnikov: Your six months ban is now long gone. You could have started competing long time ago.

Karjakin: The question is not that I could not participate 6 months in competitions rather that there was a very important event – the Candidates Tournament. The winner of this tournament could participate in the race for the title of World Champion. I have been denied this opportunity […] This is the highest of events and I am deeply offended. After that there was a tournament in the USA, but a Russian citizen could participate only if he signs a letter that you are against the Special Operation (ed.note the War Russia-Ukraine). So it turns out that you have to betray your country to participate.

Korchevnikov: So it turns out that the ban is over, but you have to necessarily sign this “pasquil” to participate in the competition, yet not under your country’s flag?

Karjakin: Yes, not under your country’s flag, this is 100% out of question.

Korchevnikov: Can you explain this to me. For me the beauty, the meaning of sport is to participate in a competition (defending) under flag (symbol) of your country.

Karjakin: I totally agree with you. I took a decision for myself a year ago not to participate in this way. I have stated my position long time ago. I do not judge the people that participate at tournaments at any cost. But this is not my way. The only thing I want to add to this topic is that the Russian Chess Federation took the correct decision to move from the European Chess Union to the Asian Chess Federation (ed. note see the ECU reaction here). This transfer will give us a chance to participate in Asian championships and they are much stronger than the European. Because now China and India have the best chess schools in the world.

Korchevnikov: But still there are [players] which participate and agree to this deal with their consciousness [with no flag, signing the anti-war letter]. Your colleague Ian, whose family name says it all [ed. note Nepomniachtchi roughly translates to “not remembering”] signed everything, signed this denial of his own country, and went on to compete under a neutral flag.

Karjakin: We stopped communicating with Ian an year ago. We have played many years together for the national team. But so to say, our ways have parted. Many people cannot judge right. As one of those negative examples we can give the statement of the World Champion Magnus Carlsen, who in general always has his own opinions. [Carlsen] looked normal, he is a European, yes he has doubts, but he always expressed normally when participating in discussions. And suddenly he said that Russians should not participate in international tournaments at all.

Korchevnikov: But this is fascism. Just fascism, right?

Karjakin: I was reluctant [shy/coy] to say this, but maybe it is.

[Follows a segment where Korchevnikov ardently speaks against Nepomniachtchi and Carlsen]

Korchevnikov: And now this Ian Nepomniachtchi will play against who?

Karjakin: With the Chinese Ding Liren.

Korchevnikov: Who are you rooting for?

Karjakin: From a chess player point of view, this match will be interesting, from a fan point of view it is not so important.

Sergey Karjakin runs for Russian Chess Federation President https://www.chessdom.com/sergey-karjakin-runs-for-russian-chess-federation-president/ Sat, 03 Dec 2022 14:53:46 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=85460 Russian Grandmaster Sergey Karjakin announced today on his official Telegram account that he will join the race in the upcoming elections for President of the Russian Chess Federation. Karjakin, who was earlier this year banned for 6 months from FIDE competitions, publicly criticized the leadership of the Russian Chess Federation as well as FIDE. (all news on Sergey Karjakin can be found here)

According to the new rules of the Russian Chess Federation, a presidential candidate must be nominated by an accredited regional federation. Sergey Karjakin’s candidacy was nominated by the Chess Federation of the Chechen Republic. Speaking for kp.ru, Karjakin said that he has good relations with the Chess Federation of the Chechen Republic “I flew to Chechnya not so long ago. We talked with Ramzan Kadyrov (President of the Chechen Republic) and had a very good time, played chess with children and among ourselves. I don’t see anything shameful in this. On the contrary, I am very grateful for the support and for the nomination”. Karjakin’s opponent in the race for the President of the Russian Chess Federation will be Andrey Filatov.

See Karjakin’s announcement below the picture

“Dear friends! I have important news!

In recent months, I have been actively and to the point criticizing the leadership of the Russian Chess Federation. I sincerely believed that constructive criticism would help the Federation to pay attention to the problematic aspects of its activities.

Alas, after 8 months I do not see any positive changes in the activities of the FSR (Russian Chess Federation). Executive Director Mark Glukhovsky, who initiated the signing of an open letter against the SVO (special military operation), lives quietly in Israel and still remains in his position, despite complete failures in management (at least absence from the workplace) and corruption scandals. The vast majority of chess players and regional federations do not receive any support from the FSR (Russian Chess Federation). Help for young, promising chess players is negligible. The main principle of the Federation is “Genius must be hungry.” Many talented athletes move to other countries, and no one even comes to dialogue with them. As a person who is not indifferent, I cannot stand aside and be silent!

Andrey Filatov, the incumbent FSR (Russian Chess Federation) President, recently announced that he will again run for a third term (he first led the FSR [Russian Chess Federation] in 2014). Federation emissaries have already spread the message to the regions that the elections will be uncontested, and have begun to collect signatures in favor of the “only” candidate.

A team of five vice-presidents is going to the elections with Filatov, all of them are respected and honored people who have done a lot for the development of chess, but the absence of the famous A.E. Karpov, who is the current vice-president of the FSR (Russian Chess Federation). Maybe the whole point is that he had the imprudence to agree with me on some issues of criticism of the activities of the FSR (Russian Chess Federation)?! However, the executive director plays a key role in the day-to-day activities of the Federation, and I regard the extension of Glukhovsky’s powers in this post as a spit in the face of the entire chess community.

Considering the above mentioned circumstances, after much deliberation, I decided to run for the post of President of the FSR (Russian Chess Federation)!

Yes, I might not be able to. Competitors are strong, and over the 8 years of government, a lot of “own people” have been placed.
But I feel it is my duty and a matter of honor to try to change the current situation!
I would really like our sport to develop, despite the current stagnation and stagnation.

My goal is to organize work with young talents, hold many new tournaments, and help in every way to ensure that our players and coaches do not go abroad in search of a better life. And it is equally important to organize real support for the regions from the federal center. Today, they are remembered once every 4 years before the next congress …

I guarantee that I will do my best to improve the activities of the Russian Chess Federation in all areas, I believe that if I am elected, I can give it a new impetus for development!

I express my gratitude to the Chess Federation of the Chechen Republic for nominating my candidacy! (According to the new rules of the FSR (Russian Chess Federation), a presidential candidate must go to the polls from an accredited regional federation).

If we do not win now, we will have to wait for a long 4 years, and there is no such time.
The current President of the Federation Filatov A.V. appointed himself as the head coach of the national teams. But it did not help us to win the Olympic gold.

Comprehensive development of chess in Russia is my task, mission and goal! I call on all caring people who are interested in the development of chess and want positive changes to support me. It would be important for me to see that we are together, and I am sure that this is the only way we can win!

Morozevich replaces Grischuk at the “Chess Stars 2022” tournament https://www.chessdom.com/morozevich-replaces-grischuk-at-the-chess-stars-2022-tournament/ Fri, 30 Sep 2022 12:15:31 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=83305 The International round-robin tournament “Chess stars 2022” will be held from 29 September – 5 October in Moscow, Russia. The main event is a 10 player round robin tournament with 10 world-known grandmasters from Russia, Azerbaijan, India and Spain: Sergey Karjakin, Vladimir Kramnik, Teimour Radjabov, Alexander Morozevich, Francisco Vallejo, Vladislav Artemiev, Ernesto Inarkiev, Raunak Sadhwani, Aleksandra Goryachkina and Kateryna Lagno.

Morozevich replaced Grischuk just hours before the start of the tournament. Although the official reason is not yet known, many speculate that the reason might be connected with Grischuk’s anti-war sentiments and his comments regarding Karjakin’s ban

This will be Karjakin’s second tournament after he received a 6 months ban from participating in FIDE events as he competed this July at the 4-player round-robin in Moscow. This time, however, he is playing without the ban, which has just expired

Sergey Karjakin on Carlsen’s statement: Niemann’s guilt has not been proven, but there is no smoke without fire https://www.chessdom.com/sergey-karjakin-on-carlsens-statement-niemanns-guilt-has-not-been-proven-but-there-is-no-smoke-without-fire/ Tue, 27 Sep 2022 14:56:59 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=83144 After Hans Niemann defeated the World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen in the third round of the Sinquefield Cup 2022, Carlsen decided to withdraw from the tournament. Rumors that Magnus Carlsen suspected Niemann was cheating were spreading over social medias, when Magnus Carlsen put more wood in the fire as he refused to play against Hans Niemann in the Julius Baer Generation Cup, resigning his game after two played moves. Magnus Carlsen yesterday published the official statement on the topic stating that he believes Hans Niemann “has cheated more – and more recently – than he publicly admitted”. Carlsen confirmed he was considering to withdraw from Sinquefield Cup as soon as he heard Niemann will replace Rapport in the tournament.

It seems that most of the top grandmasters took Carlsen’s side showing understanding for his withdrawal from Sinquefield Cup and resignation against Niemann. The trend is intensifying after Carlsen published the official statement which was described by Nakamura as very strong, while Fabiano Caruana agreed with Magnus on the cheating problem.

Sergey Karjakin today spoke for championat.ru, saying that he cannot say whether Niemann cheated or not, because the American’s guilt was not proven. However, he added that there is no smoke without fire: “The problem of cheating in chess is very serious – no one has taken any actions for years. I will say from my own experience that I participated in the strongest international competitions and practically there were either no measures, or there were absolutely formal ones, which, if desired, could be very easily circumvented. This is a problem… But whether Niemann has cheated – I have no answer, because his guilt has not been proven – he was not caught red-handed. The fact that Niemann cheated in online tournament is a fact. Therefore, the attitude towards him is rather biased. But there is no smoke without fire“, concluded Karjakin.

Sergey Karjakin’s ban from FIDE events has expired https://www.chessdom.com/sergey-karjakins-ban-from-fide-events-has-expired/ Fri, 23 Sep 2022 09:21:13 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=82870 The FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Commission (EDC) banned Russian grandmaster Sergey Karjakin from taking part in FIDE events for six months. EDC found Sergey Karjakin guilty of breach of article 2.2.10 of the FIDE Code of Ethics on March 21st, 2022 and the 6-month ban expired yesterday. Sergey Karjakin appealed to FIDE’s decision, but his appeal got dismissed by the Appeal Chamber of the EDC.

Despite the ban, Karjakin took part in the round-robin event in Moscow which included Anatoly Karpov, Alexander Grischuk and Alexander Morozevich in the field. All four players have in higher or lesser extent supported the Russian invasion in Ukraine, with Anatoly Karpov – as member of the Russian Duma – voting to recognize the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics. While Grischuk has voiced his opposition to the war during the Belgrade Grand Prix, none of the four players have signed the open letter by Russian chess players to Vladimir Putin to stop the military actions. Interestingly, the commentary of the event will be done by Sergey Shipov, who is also penalized by the FIDE Ethics Commission (see the full story here).

The next tournament for Sergey Karjakin starts this month in Moscow and features the total prize fund of 230.000 euros.

Karjakin suggests the creation of a parallel International Chess Federation if Baryshpolets wins https://www.chessdom.com/karjakin-suggests-the-creation-of-a-parallel-international-chess-federation-if-baryshpolets-wins/ Tue, 19 Jul 2022 15:11:45 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=80037 Sergey Karjakin is currently playing his first event after he received a 6 months ban from participating in FIDE events. Karjakin competes in a closed round-robin event in a field of four participants who in higher or lesser extent supported the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In a short interview for the Russian News Agency TASS, Karjakin commented on the upcoming Ukraine vs Russia FIDE elections battle which will take place in Chennai, India, during the 44th Chess Olympiad. If a Ukrainian is president of FIDE, we’ll simply all be left penniless. Russians will definitely not participate in any tournaments and that will be the end of it. Then we will definitely have to create something new. But this such an apocalyptic scenario, of course” said Karjakin.

This is not the first time that Sergey Karjakin proposes creating Russian-based chess international institutions. At the time chess.com closed its platform for Russian players, Karjakin announced he is developing his own chess platform which aims to hold online competitions and will have artificial intelligence to detect cheating. “I hope that a full-fledged Russian chess portal will be released this year, and we will not depend on Western platforms” wrote Karjakin on his Telegram channel.

After cheering the Russian aggression against Ukraine soil, Karjakin was granted the medal “For Merit to the Fatherland”. Sergey Karjakin showed his proudness to get the Russian award of the second level saying: “Thanks a lot! I serve Russia!” on his official Telegram account. All Karjakin’s case news can be found here
