Each of the 9 rounds consists of a classical game where a win is worth 2 points and a loss 0. If the players draw they play an Armageddon game, where the winner earns 1.5 points and the loser 1 point. No draw offers are allowed before move 30. The classical time control is 2 hours for all moves, with a 10-second increment per move only after move 40. For Armageddon White (the same player who had White in the classical game) has 10 minutes to Black’s 7, with a 1-second increment from move 41. Black wins if the game ends in a draw. A tie for 1st place will be decided by two 3+2 blitz games followed, if necessary, by a 5 vs. 4-minute Armageddon game.

TePe Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament 2023 https://www.chessdom.com/tepe-sigeman-co-chess-tournament-2023/ Tue, 02 May 2023 09:49:00 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=89297 TePe Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament 2023 will take place May 4-10 this year, at the Elite Plaza Hotel in central Malmo. The home team is represented by Sweden’s number one, GM Nils Grandelius (winner in 2013, 2017 and 2018). Among the challengers is an old acquaintance, Dutch GM Jorden van Foreest (winner of the Tepe Sigeman Chess Tournament in 2021), as well as former World Championship challenger GM Boris Gelfand, Israel, and 8-times Russian champion and multiple World Championship contender, GM Peter Svidler. Some of the most promising young chess players of today (all born in this century): the top scorer on board one in the team chess Olympics last year, GM Dommaruju Gukesh, India, last year’s runner-up in the Tepe Sigeman Chess Tournament, GM Arjun Erigaisi, India, the runner-up in the 2022 World Rapid Chess Championship, GM Vincent Keymer, Germany, and the world’s youngest grandmaster, 14-year-old Abhimanyu Mishra, USA will also participate. Live games here

The tournament is eligible for the FIDE Circuit (Qualification Path of the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2024). In the situation that two or more players have the same score, qualification points will be shared equally, with an exception for a tied first place, in which case tiebreak games will determine the first place. Please note, tiebreak games will determine only the first place. If more than two players participate in the tiebreak games, all other players will share second place.

Dommaraju Gukesh is the youngest chess player ever to beat Magnus Carlsen as World Champion https://www.chessdom.com/dommaraju-gukesh-is-the-youngest-player-ever-to-beat-magnus-carlsen-as-world-champion/ Sun, 16 Oct 2022 21:36:00 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=84026 Indian teenage chess star Dommaraju Gukesh today broke another record as he became the youngest chess player ever to beat Magnus Carlsen as World Chess Champion. Earlier this year, Gukesh became the youngest Indian player to cross the 2700 rating, and became the youngest Indian player to break into World Top 100.

Gukesh defeated Magnus Carlsen in the 9th round of the Aimchess Rapid, the 8th event on the $1.6 million 2022 Meltwater Champions Chess Tour. Having black pieces, Carlsen had an almost winning position after critical 25.Rc7, but terribly blundered with 25…Re8? Gukesh didn’t miss his chance and forced the World Chess Champion to resignation after only a few moves. (Replay all games here)

Obviously, beating Magnus is always special but I was not really very proud of that game,” said Dommaraju after the game. Commenting on his losses against Indian young grandmasters, Carlsen said: “Pragg is the only one I’ve lost multiple times to. As for Arjun and Gukesh: Arjun I’ve generally beaten; Gukesh very similar. (…) I think Gukesh has been extremely impressive in classical chess recently. Perhaps this rapid win wasn’t his proudest effort, even though getting a win is always nice”. Aimchess Rapid Day 3 recap

16-year-old Gukesh D shines in Chennai with 5/5 points! https://www.chessdom.com/16-year-old-gukesh-d-shines-in-chennai-with-5-5-points/ Tue, 02 Aug 2022 18:29:15 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=80669 16-year-old Dommaraju Gukesh played brilliantly to defeat former World Championship Challenger Alexei Shirov even as his India Team B shocked fourth seed Spain with a 2.5-1.5 score at the ongoing 44th Chess Olympiad being played at Mamallapuram, Chennai. Replay the match here

This was Gukesh’s fifth victory on the trot and also a fifth victory for his India B Team. Gukesh, incidentally after this victory overtakes Vidit Gujrathi in Live ratings to be the third highest rated player in India after Anand and Harikrishna. He holds the second position on the live rating junior lists being behind Alireza Firouzja. After the game, Gukesh commented: “I got a fine position after an error from him and slowly outplayed him. It’s a pleasure to play Shirov and to beat him, is special”. Round 5 results (open section) / Round 6 team pairings

The game incidentally was an old Sicilian where Shirov tried an unconventional 9th move. Gukesh was quick on the uptake and started pressing for victory after blunting out Shirov’s pieces. His King personally escorted one of his pawns to the queening square with the help of his two rooks, prompting Shirov’s resignation on the 44th turn in a position which was beyond repair. The 16-year-old summed up “My strategy was to provoke him and being an aggressive player, he could not resist aggressive moves, ones which I anticipated. There were lot of checkmating patterns arising in the game“. Replay all Gukesh’s games from the 2022 Chess Olympiad below
