The 2024 edition of the World Rapid will be in Manhattan, New York, December 26-31, 2024. This is a changed compared to previous editions, as the event used to finish December 30.

David Llada summarizes the problem, “I hope the conference on finance touches on the topic of “how to improve your credit scores”, because booking a room in Manhattan during New Year’s Eve will probably require getting a loan.”

Sergey Karjakin to conduct a charitable simultaneous chess exhibition in NYC https://www.chessdom.com/sergey-karjakin-to-conduct-a-charitable-simultaneous-chess-exhibition-in-nyc/ Sat, 19 Nov 2016 10:06:32 +0000 http://www.chessdom.com/?p=61272 Reach2StarsNew York, November 18, 2016 – Sergey Karjakin has announced today that he will conduct a charitable simultaneous chess exhibition in NYC on February 1st, 2017. Ten chess lovers will get to play with Mr. Karjakin during this event.

Tickets will be sold on http://www.Reach2Stars.Com/sk_nyc via an all-pay auction: every bidder must pay regardless of whether they win the tickets; the ten highest bidders will win. The auction will end on January 16, 2017, proceeds will go to UNICEF.

While making the announcement, Mr. Karjakin said: “We all compete these days: some people for money, some others for glory, some – for promoting political visions. We become so involved into our fights that we forget about those who do not get a chance to compete, about children who live in poverty and often die before becoming adults. Every kid deserves to get some help in surviving and in realizing their potential in this life. The world cannot afford to lose from hunger or curable disease it’s future scientists, politicians, athletes. That’s why I am, as a young father, supporting UNICEF.”

Anna Chakvetadze, former world’s No 5 female tennis player, currently the founder and Chairwoman of Reach2Stars Inc., said:
”Celebrities want to make a difference and contribute to their favorite causes. But they usually face two challenges: how to maximize an outcome of the time they donate to the charities, and how to minimize their personal safety risks while participating in charitable events. Reach2Stars addresses both of these concerns. All-pay auctions can boost total revenues from each event while actually decreasing an average contribution by an individual participant. Our rigorous background checks ensure that potentially destructive individuals are not getting tickets to the events. We are very proud that Sergey Karjakin decided to distribute tickets for his simultaneous chess exhibition through www.Reach2Stars.Com/sk_nyc .”

In the decisive round 14 Karjakin won the final game against Fabiano Caruana and surged a full point ahead in the standings. The Russian player is going to face the defending champion Magnus Carlsen.

The Carlsen – Karjakin 2016 World Chess Championship is going to take place in the city of New York.

The 12 round match will take place between 11-30 November and is expected to attract a global online and TV audience of more than 1 billion fans. The two Grandmasters will compete for a prize fund of at least 1 million euros ($1.1m).

“I and all New Yorkers welcome the World Chess Championship back to New York City. What better place to be than the city where parks are often populated by chess enthusiasts,” said New York Mayor Bill de Blasio.

The last American player to compete in the World Championship match was Gata Kamsky, when he played for the World Championship against Anatoly Karpov in 1996. Prior to that Bobby Fischer was World Champion between 1972 and 1975 after defeating Boris Spassky in a contest that symbolised the Cold War tensions between the US and the Soviet Union. However, now in 2016, we will see the match in the USA, but between a Norwegian and a Russian player.

Chess is becoming increasingly popular around the world and is the only game that is pre-downloaded on nearly every new smartphone. Hundreds of millions of games are played over the internet every week and in the US more people play chess regularly than golf, according to YouGov, the respected polling organisation.

Celebrity fans of the sport include Jay Z, Kevin Spacey, Jude Law, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bill Gates. Tobey Maguire recently produced and starred in a Hollywood film about the famous 1972 Fischer-Spassky Championship match.

The last World Championship match, held in Russia in 2014, enjoyed record-breaking coverage with the total audience for the whole event topping 1.2bn people. Carlsen, won that contest by defending his title for the first time against ex-world champion Vishy Anand. If AGON, the commercial partner of FIDE, want to keep u the popularity momentum of the event, a change of policy is a must after the low visibility of the Candidates.
