Abdusattorov yesterday played a draw against Levon Aronian. The 18-year-old Uzbekistani grandmaster had White pieces and reached a completely closed position without chances for a better result. The players agreed for a draw in the 31st move.

Magnus Carlsen won his second game in a row, this time against Fabiano Caruana. Carlsen, having black, equalized in the early middlegame. Caruana made a bad mistake with 22.Bc2 and Carlsen got the decisive advantage which he easily transformed into a victory.

Yesterday’s 8th round saw another three decisive results: Richard Rapport won against Praggnanandhaa, Jorden van Foreest defeated Arjun Erigaisi, and Gukesh claimed a victory against Parham Maghsoodloo.

Today is the second free day of the event, and games will continue tomorrow, January 24th, starting at 14:00 CEST.

Carlsen suffered two losses in a row, which happened in 2015 for the last time. The Uzbekistani teen prevailed in the exciting Queens endgame holding Black pieces. With his fifth round victory, Abdusattorov scores 4 points, followed by Anish Giri who holds second place with 3.5 points.

Another two games of the 5th round finished in a decisive result. Levon Aronian and Parham Maghsoodloo scored their first wins in the event playing against Vincent Keymer and Jorden van Foreest (respectively).

Velimir Ivic was convincing with Black against Abhimanyu Mishra. The 14-year-old American made a crucial mistake with 33.Qe3 and Velimir didn’t let go. He brought the game to the end with almost perfect technique and scored his first win in the tournament.

Mustafa Yilmaz scored against Erwin L’Ami. The Turkish grandmaster had a clear advantage in the early middlegame, quickly upgrading it to a decisive advantage. L’Ami eventually resigned in the 38th move.

Javokhir Sindarov outplayed Vaishali R in the two rooks endgame. The material was equal, but Sindarov’s rooks were too active and Vaishali couldn’t defend.

After a warm-up, the match will begin at 3 p.m. Interested parties can sit in the main grandstand for free. The grandmasters will play 30 minutes twice. On Thursday, January 19, the Tata Steel Masters will again play in a soccer stadium. Then the Johan Cruijff ArenA in Amsterdam will be the setting. There, under the name ‘Tata Steel Chess On Tour’, the Masters will play the 5th round of their tournament.

Youth chess simul

The soccer match is not the only thing on the program Wednesday afternoon at Telstar. About 100 children from elementary schools and chess clubs in the region will play a chess simultaneous against chess professionals Hans Böhm, Jop Delemarre and Sacha Valster the same afternoon from 3:15 p.m. in the stadium. So tradition, too, returns.

Tata Steel Chess 2023

The 85th edition of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament takes place in Wijk aan Zee and started Jan. 13. The tournament will last until January 29, 2023. All playing days are open to interested parties free of charge after registration and can also be followed online.

Only two games of the first round finished with a decisive result. 18-year-old Nodirbek Abdusattorov prevailed against Richard Rapport in a very interesting and creative game. After the unusual opening, Abdusattorov reached a slightly better endgame managing to provoke the opponent’s mistake and score a full point.

Ding Liren was victorious against Indian prodigy Gukesh D. Chinese grandmaster reached an edged middlegame and used Bishop pair advantage to get the material advantage.
