Magnus Carlsen beat Arjun Erigaisi on demand to catch Nodirbek in a tie for 2nd place, while Wesley So finished 4th.

Nodirbek Abdusattorov led the 2023 Tata Steel Masters after every single round before the last, where he took a half-point lead into a game with White against the lowest-rated player. There was every chance he would wrap up victory with minimal fuss, but instead, we got a thriller. When the dust had settled, Anish Giri had won the trophy without the need for a playoff.

Giri closes the gap, Abdusattorov holds his lead – Tata Steel Masters R9 recap https://www.chessdom.com/giri-closes-the-gap-abdusattorov-holds-his-lead-tata-steel-masters-r9-recap/ Wed, 25 Jan 2023 08:24:34 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=86568 Nine rounds are played at the Tata Steel Masters 2023 in Wijk aan Zee and Nodirbek Abdusattorov holds his lead in the event with 6.5 points. Anish Giri defeated Ding Liren to close the gap, and trails by half a point.

It was a thrilling game between Vincent Keymer and Nodirbek Abdusattorov. Keymer was slightly better from the opening, reaching the winning rooks endgame after almost 5 hours of play. However, he missed his chances to take off the leader, and after 80.Rb6, Abdusattorov managed to hold a draw.

Richard Rapport won against Arjun Erigaisi in the 25-move miniature. Rapport, having black, built a very interesting attacking position and the Indian teen didn’t find a way to defend.

He defeated Arjun Erigaisi yesterday to be a full point ahead of four runner-ups: Anish Giri, Fabiano Caruana, Praggnanandhaa and Wesley So.

It was a tense and very sharp game between the two youngsters, but Arjun Erigaisi made a mistake with 26.Qxb7 which happened to be decisive. Abdusattorov took advantage and didn’t let go.

Praggnanandhaa defeated Jorden van Foreest to score 4.5 points and get closer to the top. Pragg had a clear advantage from the early middlegame and slowly improved it throughout the game to eventually score a full point.

Wesley So scored his second consecutive win in the tournament, beating Gukesh D in yesterday’s seventh round. Everything started going wrong for Gukesh after 28.Rd2?! and Wesley forced him to resign after only 6 moves.

Magnus Carlsen is getting back into the winning mood, as he defeated Richard Rapport with White pieces. It was a very engaging game with Carlsen keeping the decisive advantage all way through.

Abdusattorov today drew his game against Praggnanandhaa having White pieces.

The only two decisive games of today’s round were played between Wesley So and Vincent Keymer, and Fabiano Caruana and Gukesh D. Wesley So was victorious against the young German, prevailing in the interesting endgame where Keymer’s 34…b3 seemed to be a fatal mistake. Caruana defeated Gukesh with White pieces as he came better out of the opening and slowly but surely increased the advantage to score a full point. Replay all games here
