He will play live GM Hans Niemann in the next match, the first time they will meet for a game in-person since 2022. GM Hans Niemann has surged to number 16 in the world on the live rating list after a series of matches he’s organized entitled “Hans Niemann Against The World.”

GothamChess brought the first image of the 4 players at Speed Chess Championship 2024 together. In a modern studio, Carlsen, Niemann, Nakamura, and Firouzja are preparing for the show. Tarjei Svensen speculates this can be the second most seen chess event of the year and it might very well be. Especially if Chess.com’s alleged base of 180 million users gets activated. Numbers lower than “in the millions” will be regarded as failure. Live games here starting Septermber 6

Hikaru Nakamura about Maxim Dlugy’s leaked e-mails: This is spicy https://www.chessdom.com/hikaru-nakamura-about-maxim-dlugys-leaked-e-mails-this-is-spicy/ Wed, 28 Sep 2022 22:38:45 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=83244 After 19-year-old American grandmaster Hans Niemann defeated Magnus Carlsen in the third round of the Sinquefield Cup 2022, the World Chess Champion decided to withdraw from the event. Rumors that Magnus Carlsen suspected Niemann was cheating started spreading over social medias and the “Carlsen – Niemann” controversy is the top news in mass medias ever since. Magnus broke the silence by giving the interview after the Preliminary stage of the Julius Baer Generation Cup where he resigned the game against Niemann after only two played moves.

Carlsen couldn’t particularly speak on the topic, but he mentioned “Niemann’s mentor” GM Maxim Dlugy: “I have to say I am very impressed by Niemann’s play & I think his mentor Maxim Dlugy must have been doing a great job“.
Shortly after, it became clear that Carlsen mentioned Maxim Dlugy because the American grandmaster got caught cheating on chess.comMotherboard, the tech section of Vice, now confirms that Dlugy was cheating in chess.com tournaments, reviewing the confidential emails between GM Maxim Dlugy and Daniel Rensch – Chess.com’s Chief Chess Officer where the American grandmaster confesses cheating.

Hikaru Nakamura reviewed the complete article and the given emails during his live stream: “This is spicy. They actually gave emails, so this is pretty wild“. Hikaru found out from Maxim Dlugy-Daniel Rensch’s e-mail discussion that Dlugy cheated in one of the Titled Tuesdays back in 2020. Nakamura and Dlugy actually got paired in that tournament, but it appears that the game against Hikaru was the only game of the event in which Maxim Dlugy didn’t use the outside engine help. Nakamura showed the game and the video he streamed during the game where he called Dlugy’s moves weird. See the complete video below

Fabiano Caruana and Maurice Ashley comment on Carlsen’s statement (C-Squared podcast) https://www.chessdom.com/fabiano-caruana-and-maurice-ashley-comment-on-carlsens-statement-c-squared-podcast/ Mon, 26 Sep 2022 23:24:07 +0000 https://www.chessdom.com/?p=83117 Fabiano Caruana and Maurice Ashley joined the C-squared podcast tonight speaking live about the official statement by Magnus Carlsen. Carlsen said that he believes Niemann has cheated more than he publicly admitted, adding that cheating is an existential threat to the game. Fabiano Caruana agreed: “I think undoubtedly it’s a threat to the entire nature of the game and it’s been like that for a while, but we are only now really getting into it publicly, while it stayed behind the scenes for quite some while”.

“It seems Magnus has concerns not only about online chess, but also over-the-board chess. And we didn’t think of that as much, because we thought maybe it’s not so easy. People tried, they went into the bathroom with their phones, and usually they get caught. I think the realization now is that with the technology, it is possible to cheat while sitting on the board potentially. And that’s the worry
“, added Fabiano.

Maurice Ashley had a different take on the topic saying that he wishes we had more: “I am happy that he (Magnus Carlsen) finally said something, but it feels like there are still lots of questions hanging in the air and we need to get some answers“. He added: “Hans already admitted he’s been cheating in the past, it’s possible that he’s cheated now. The thing about this is – until you give evidence, in the world that we live in, the so-called fair world, the traditional system, usually operates not based on hearsay, not based on suspicions, but on proof. And I think that it’s a bit sad that we are feeling like hey, if we suspect somebody enough, that’s enough. Even if he (Hans Niemann) is guilty, even if he’s straight up guilty, but you can’t just suspect somebody and that be enough, we can’t live in that world.“. See the complete video below

Magnus Carlsen confirmed with the statement that he was thinking about withdrawal from the Sinquefield Cup 2022 as soon as he heard that Hans Niemann comes as the last-minute replacement for Richard Rapport. Fabiano Caruana spoke about that a few days ago, when he also criticized Kenneth Regan’s anti-cheating methods.
