FIDE Candidates 2024 with no FIDE President present #TweetOftheDay

Yesterday FIDE announced that Toronto will host the 2024 FIDE Candidates. The announcement came with a statement by the FIDE President Arkadij Dvorkovich, where he said, “The Candidates Tournaments will start in just over a year’s time, but I know many chess fans will already be counting down the days towards these exceptional events” Yet, offline statements from the FIDE President might be the most the chess community gets from Dvorkovich, as Canada is among he signatories opposing any sport leaders with ties to the Kremlin.

Peter Heine Nielsen asks, “Are FIDE willing to host the tournament on the premise that the President will not visit?” George Mastrokoukos replies, “FIDE is collapsing in recent months, chaos everywhere […] I won’t be surprised if no one checked this “small” detail about Canada.”
