The Chess Olympiad 2022 was played from 29 July – 9 August in Chennai, India and broke the participation record set in Batumi 2018. Without representatives from Russia, China and Belarus, the USA team was the absolute favorite to win the event. USA lost practical chances for the Olympic gold after playing 2-2 against Armenia due to the unfortunate situation that happened in Sam Shankland’s game.
